Sailor King of Pens - Samurai: Battle of Ganryu-jima

Sailor is pleased to announce the next model in the Samurai limited edition series – ‘Samurai – Battle of Ganryujima’ by the artist Ikki Moroike who has drawn inspiration for the images on this very special pen from the story of the battle.

The small island called Ganryu-Jima is famous for Japanese Samurai enthusiasts.
The greatest swordsman, Musashi Miyamoto, defeated another Samurai legend, Kojira Sasaki, at Ganryu-Jima.  This is a popular folklore story in Japan.
The original name of the island is Fune-shima.  Ganryu was the nickname of the defeated Kojira.  He was born nearby this island and was greatly respected.
His name was given to the island in his honour, even though he was defeated in the battle.

Both Musashi and Kojira were regarded as very strong Samurai warriors and both were previously undefeated in battle. This was a fight to determine who was to be the strongest at the time.
Musashi is said to have used a special wooden sword (katane) made from an oar from a boat instead of a real sword. Kojira had a long sword called Monobishi-zao, (meaning laundry in Japanese).
Kojira’s fighting style is called ‘Tsubame-gaeshi’. Tsubami means a swallow and Gaeshi means ‘a strike to kill’ and he is reputed to have killed a swallow in flight!
This unique style of Tsubame-gaeshi is characterised by the right hand gripping the sword upside down which allows the swordsman to fool the opposing warrior into thinking that the initial strike downwards was finished, whereas in reality the sword was then immediately thrust upwards surprising the opponent and usually killing them.
The great dual took place on April 13th, 1612. The two Samurai had agreed to meet at 8am at the island but Musashi was intentionally two hours late, which seriously irritated Kojiro, who shouted ”You are too late.” As he drew his sword and angrily threw away his scabbard into the sea, Musashi responded “You have already lost as, if you were to win, you would need your scabbard again later.”

Musashi won the battle with a single blow to the head which killed Kojiro.
