Aurora journey among the ancient maps begins in the city of Alexandria in Egypt, home of the grandiose Library, and where around 150 A.D. the geographer Claudio Tolomeo, drew the first geographical map of the known world, using a grid of geometric lines, corresponding to latitude and longitude.
When Tolomeo’s work appeared for the first time in Europe it revolutionized continental cartography.
The traditional arrangement of medieval maps with east at the top (from which the term orientation derives) was replaced by the north-south axis, to which the modern cartographic grid still in use today was added.
