22STUDIO Concrete Writing Tools Module Series
The most noticeable features of the appearance of fair-faced concrete are the dividing lines and screw holes of the cavity/core plate.
Marks and traces of this technique are left behind directly on the surface of the building, straightforward and authentic; it is a creative process as well as a testimony of exquisite craftsmanship.
The area on the pen barrel simulates a miniature and scaled-down concrete plate to create a three-dimensional curved surface; even the dividing lines and drilling holes are clearly visible.
NEW- From the pen’s barrel to the cap, fusiform design in one piece
In architecture, there has been a tradition and constructing technique of creating curved surfaces with geometric plane. This edition of writing tool has a curved surface or "fusiform" (spindle) shape, derived from the same architectural concept.
At the same time, around the joints of the concrete plates, natural traces and marks from usage will appear; the more you use them, the darker the colour will be, and the smoother the touch will get.
It is worth mentioning that, for the overall spindle-shaped aesthetics, the stainless steel cap is especially contracted at the top, which is a rare design for writing tools in the market. It must be manually processed one by one, which is time-consuming and labour-intensive.
Béton brut: From Architecture to Writing
After being cast, concrete will usually receive a finishing treatment that smooths its surface, ridding it of imperfections. In the case of béton brut architecture, the concrete is left unfinished, simple yet majestic, expressing the pattern left by the formwork.
22STUDIO applies the same conceptual process in producing everyday-carry items: stationery, wristwatch, and table clock; creating functional miniature béton brut architectures for your table, on your wrist, and in the palm of your hand.
Béton brut is a French term that translates in English to “raw concrete”. The term is used to describe concrete that is left unfinished after being cast, displaying the patterns and seams imprinted on it by the formwork.Béton brut is not a material itself, but rather an architectural expression of concrete.
The use of béton brut was pioneered by modernist architects such as Auguste Perret and Le Corbusier. Le Corbusier coined the term béton brut during the construction of Unité d'Habitation in Marseille, France built in 1952.
The term began to spread widely after the British architectural critic Reyner Banham used it in the title of his 1966 book, The New Brutalism: Ethic or Aesthetic?, to characterize a recent cluster of new architectural design, particularly in Europe.
Béton brut became popular among modern architects, leading to the creation of the brutalist architecture style, which thrived in the 1950s–1970s.
Brutalism stems from the philosophies of modern architecture that promote the truth to materials, which is achieved by their raw expression.
The essence of the philosophy is seen in the imperfections of béton brut which stem from the idea to create an aesthetic based on the exposure of a building's components, including the frame, sheathing, and mechanical systems.
The result is the visibility of the imprinted seams and construction methods of the formwork used to mold the concrete.
This style of concrete is a part of structural expressionism, which emerged as steel structures became more advanced and viable.
Proprietary “Concrete Curing” Process
What is “Concrete Curing”? To harden and strengthen, newly cast concrete must go through a process called hydration, where water is continually applied.
This process often results in the appearance of white streaks and fissures.
Through continued research and trial, 22STUDIO has developed a hydration process that produces concrete that meets our high standards in both hardness and aesthetics.
Newly cast products are placed in a climate controlled “Concrete aging (curing) chamber” for 14 days (similar to the aging of beef or red wine), where it reaches maximum hardness, and gains patterns and textures unique to each piece.
